Cats VS. Dogs Speech...

My Narrative

Krishna’s Narrative

Andy was running, running so fast he felt like fainting. He saw two white helicopters hovering above him. They’ve got me now, he thought. He knew what they wanted. Two big men dressed in police uniform came out and chased after him. Two pairs of arms reached out to grab Andy, but missed as Andy dodged and ran fast. He was gasping for breath. “What are we going to do now? We failed Boss, Bob.” said one of the huge men. “Well, we have to try and think up an excuse Dave!” the other huge man said. “We can’t think up of an excuse we’re doomed!” said Dave.

Andy stopped and paused for a breath. They’ve lost me now, he thought. It was 11:00 pm and Andy was shivering. Suddenly Andy felt angry. “Why did the police accuse me of stealing a gem? It’s not my fault! Now I’m stuck on a remote, deserted island out of Australia with nowhere to live instead of being with my family! he shouted so loudly and kicked the coconut tree next to him. Where can I sleep for the night? he wondered. Then suddenly a shining light glows in the forest. What can that be? he thought. Andy decided to follow the light.

Andy followed the light and approached a tiny cottage. A dark shadow was moving around inside. Andy was nervous. He knocked on the door. “Who’s there?” a man called out. “I need some help.” Andy replied. The man came out. He looked about 30 years old. “You need some help?” the man asked. “Yes. You see, um... well I was in the museum and the police accused me of stealing a gem but I didn’t do it. I escaped and I found this island. I have nowhere to live and in my backpack I only have 2 cartons of juice, 2 apples and a box of crackers. Can I live with you?” “Yes, lad. What’s your name?” “Andy. And yours?” “Ted. Let’s have some dinner now.” he replied.

“I’ll give you a tour of my cottage and did you know I built it myself because I’m a builder. Andy, I’ll tell you why I came to this island. I lived in and I met someone called Barry. We soon became the best of friends. He always wore a big hat. But I didn’t know he would turn on me. One day, he said: I’m sorry Ted we can’t be friends anymore. And then he ran away. The next day I saw the news and it said: Forest Fire. The image showed a dark shadow and you could make out the figure of a big hat! It was Barry! I was devastated. People accused me of doing it because I was linked to it. But I didn’t do it. I escaped here 1 year ago. I named this island Coco Island, after my Fox Terrier dog Coco.” Ted said. “Woah!” Andy said. “I’ll give you dinner first then you can see my cottage.”

For dinner there was stir fried noodles with vegetables. “How did you get noodles Ted?” Andy asked, surprised. “I have a trustful cousin who is Violet and she supplies me with stuff by boat every 2 months.” “Well, why don’t you put your food in the fridge, Andy.” “Okay.” “Let’s have a tour now, shall we?” “Yeah, that’d be great.” So Ted showed Andy around. The kitchen was a neat, cosy corner. There was a huge tub of water and pots and pans. There was a variety of fruit, vegetables, medicinal herbs and oils, spices, flour, wheat, eggs & microwave meals. “How come you have a fridge and microwave when there is no electricity?” Andy said, breaking the silence. “My brother Max is an electrician and he comes here too with Violet because sometimes the electricity goes out when it rains.” “Oh.” “I will show you the rooms now Andy.” The first room was Ted’s room. There was a single bed, a set of draws, a lamp and a pile of books. The second room had 3 beds and the same items in Ted’s room. “Is this a guest room for people staying here?” “Yes it is because sometimes my family stays over.” “Come on let’s go and sleep now.” “Good night Ted.” “Good night too, Andy.”

The Next Morning, Thursday 19 August 2010 7:00 am

Ted was up early. Andy came into the kitchen. “Let’s eat break----” Then suddenly Andy and Ted could hear a wailing police siren coming closer. “Oh no! What can we do?” Andy cried in despair. But it was too late now because Andy could see 2 police officers and 5 people behind them coming up to the door. The police came in and suddenly Andy and Ted froze in terror. “Hi there, are you Andy and Ted?” one of the officers asked. “Y-yes.” Andy said. Andy was trembling and shaking. They’ve got me now, Andy thought. “Well we found out who committed the forest fire and the robbery of the gem. It is this lad here, Barry Smith who did it.” Barry stepped forward. His face was hidden by his big hat and he was very silent. Andy and Ted were shocked. Violet, Max, Ted's Mum, Ted's Dad and Andy's family were there! Andy's sister Evelyn said “I was so sad without you!" "Andy and Ted, you can now go back home now. Your charges are taken off and your criminal records will be taken off as you are both travelling." the other police officer said. "What?" Andy and Ted said in unison. "You and your families are going on a holiday because you deserve it after all this." Police officer 2 said. "Well Andy and Ted you better start packing when we get home! And did you know we are going to France and Spain! Two weeks in each country." said Ted's Mum. Then the police officers gave them a ride by boat and then went in a taxi to Andy's house.

"You can stay the night here.” Andy’s mum said to Ted and his family. Andy’s Mum made a delicous breakfast. Everyone loved it. There was french toast, golden brown pancakes with maple syrup and honey, freshly squeezed orange juice and colourful fruit salad. “Wow what a morning. I’ll probably be on the news today.” Andy said. “Well, I guess everything always turns out great in the end!” Ted said.

My speech

Krishna’s speech on dogs vs. cats

The dogs vs. cats debate has raged on for all time and the dog side has won! Dogs are man's best friend and cats don't even like us! So why should we like them? Unlike cats, dogs are very faithful and give you unconditional love forever. Cats barely seem to know you are around most of the time. If there is any problem a dog will serve and even protect you really well, but what would a cat do? Nothing! The dogs are very obedient creatures and will sit or lie down or heel on command unlike cats who will just smirk and walk away. Cats cannot be trained as easily as dogs. In fact it can seem impossible to train a cat. Whenever the owner talks, a dog will tilt their head and listen but cats don't really seem to have much interest in human speech. Dogs will come upon hearing their name called while cats either don't recognize their name being called or don't care that it's been called! A dog's obedience makes him even more lovable and that is the biggest reason many people prefer dogs over cats. Dogs also serve as very good companions and will play Frisbee or other games with you in the afternoon while cats, being selfish and self-centered, would prefer to take their afternoon nap quite lazily. Dogs are not at all mischievous by nature and will bring you your slippers or your evening newspaper unlike cats who might bring you a dead mouse. Dogs also serve as very good watch dogs. There's a reason they call it a watch dog and not a watch cat! They will bark to wake you up if the house is on fire or if he finds anything suspicious going on like thieves or somebody else breaking in while cats will just quietly sneak out the back door or run away. Dogs are so obedient that they will let you give them a bath easily, while a cat will struggle the entire time. Dogs also look much better at the end of a leash. A dog can be a great partner on a daily walk or your daily run. You can't take a cat with you on a run! Another great advantage that dogs have over cats is that they are easier to get along with other dogs. Dogs tend to get along with other dogs much easier than cats tend to get along with other cats. Possibly the best reason that dogs are better than cats is dogs don't use the bathroom inside your house! They go outside! No matter how much the litter is supposed to keep the smell under control, it still stinks! Dogs seem to understand your emotions and will try to comfort you whenever you are sad while cats don't really seem to notice this sort of thing. A cat is far more interested in his own life. I'm sure there are many reasons why dogs are better than cats but these are the ones I've thought of. Dogs are the best friend a man (or woman) can have. Cats? Not so much.

10% time my report

For my 10% time I did a report, imovie and podcast on global warming. This is my report.

Global Warming Report

By Krishna Narayanan

What is Global Warming?

Global Warming is the temperature rising high. Sometimes, people don’t understand why global warming might be a problem - after all, in many areas it will create a warmer and more pleasant climate. But experts predict the world will drastically change as we know it. Various studies show that: the 20th century’s ten warmest years all happened after 1985. Of these 1998 was the warmest 2001 the second.

How Global Warming Works/The Greenhouse Gases

The greenhouse gases are H₂O, CH₄, CO₂ and NO₂. That’s water vapor, methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide. These gases make the temp just right for life. The greenhouse gases let heat in from the sun that heats Earth and then Earth gives out heat but the greenhouse gases trap the Earth’s heat. Without the greenhouse gases the temp would be around-18˚C, which is too cold for life. Natural greenhouse gases make it a comfortable 15.5˚C. But by human activities, the greenhouse effect is enhanced.

CFC’s

CFC’s are also part of the greenhouse gases because they trap heat too. We need to reduce the amount of CFC’s we pump into the air because it is one of the gases responsible for global warming. There are 3 types of CFC’s: HCFC’s (hydrochlorofluorocarbons), CFC’s (chlorofluorocarbons) and HFC’s (hydrofluorocarbons).

Temperature is Rising Fast

Over the next century, Earth’s average surface temp could rise faster than at any time in the last 10000 years. Scientists expect an increase of between 0.6 and 2.5 degrees in the next 50 years and between 1.4 and 5.8 degrees in the next century.

The Worst Global Warming

The maximum warming will probably be in the Arctic, in winter. Arctic sea ice has already thinned by 40% since the 1970s; it’s possible that Greenland’s land ice may even disappear. Also, polar bears are getting endangered because there is not much ice pads to rest on. Antarctica is the opposite. If Antarctic ice melts, there is land under the ice.

Radioactive Waste

Radioactive waste is a waste product containing radioactive material. It is usually the product of a nuclear process such as nuclear fission, though industries not directly connected to the nuclear power industry may also produce radioactive waste. The majority of radioactive waste is "low-level waste", meaning it has low levels of radioactivity per mass or volume.

Radioactivity diminishes over time, so in principle the waste needs to be isolated for a period of time until it no longer poses a hazard. This can mean hours to years for some common medical or industrial radioactive wastes, or thousands of years for high-level wastes.

The Rain Forests and Forests

Every minute in the world the size of a rugby field of rain forest is cut down and around 200000 acres of rain forest are destroyed every day. Trees act like natural sponges, soaking up CO₂ from the air. This helps prevent global warming. Areas such as forests store lots of carbon, called carbon sinks.

CO₂ and CH₄ (methane) Levels are Rising

Since the end of the 18th century, the amount of CO₂ in the Earth’s atmosphere has increased from about 280 parts of carbon dioxide per million parts of air to about 370 parts per million. It’s rising at a rate of 1.2 parts per million each year. CH₄ levels have risen about 30% around the 1950s. CH₄ levels have more than doubled to 1.75 parts per million.

Water Pollution

Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, groundwater).

Water pollution affects plants and organisms living in these bodies of water; and, in almost all cases the effect is damaging either to individual species and populations, but also to the natural biological communities.

Water pollution occurs when pollutants are discharged directly or indirectly into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds.

Who Killed the Electric Car?

Rm 28 recently watched a movie about Who Killed the Electric Car and we all answered some questions and wrote a review. Here is mine.

Who Killed the Electric Car?

1. What problem does the use of the electric car solve?

A: It has no fumes coming out of the exhaust pipe, so it's an ecological car but some people say not really because the electricity contributes to global warming. Yes, this is an interesting discussion/debate. -Paul Crowhurst 6/30/10 10:15 AM But I think its an environment-friendly car. It can also go at fast speed which is cool! And it's not messy like when you put petrolium. Instead it is a simple method: Just charge it at night time. It also charges fast.

2. Who will benefit from the electric car?

A: Most people will benefit from the electric car because is environment-friendly and it can go on a fast speed. It's also not messy (like when putting in petrolium). But some people cannot benefit from the electric car because they cannot buy it because it's too expensive.

3. What problems are caused by the electric car?

A: There are not a lot of problems but there are some. Like the government is saying that it will cost a lot of money to build the electric charging stations. Also you could get electrocuted but thats very rare. And only very rich people can afford to buy it so the people who really wanted the electric car and couldn't afford it were probably devastated and sad. What about the distance that it can travel? -Paul Crowhurst 6/30/10 10:16 AM

4. Who killed the electric car?

A: So who killed the electric car? It can't be one person or company because there were many causes. Some people say it was the oil company because they sued GM. But other people say it was GM, because they disliked the EV1's, which they made and they took all the EV1's in the world. The electric car was really fast, and it was ecological. Some people even held a funeral for the electric car! Lots of people protested on the for the electric car to come back on the streets. Other people went to GM to see their electric cars in the back, but a GM worker stopped them. It's weird how they disliked their own model. It was sad to see the electric car crushed by a government truck. I'm even on the side to bring electric cars back. These are some of the reasons it was removed I think:

- Because GM even hated it.

- The electric car caused lung disease in 15-20 year olds driving the car.

- Nobody was really buying it because it was really expensive.

- Hydrogen fueled cars were better.

- Some people hated it.

- It took lots of money to build electric charging stations.

- Some people who really wanted the electric car when it was released couldn't because it was simply too expensive. They were really sad.

- Some other companies hated the electric car.

- Some people hated the design.

That is 9 reasons. I didn't really know about them but now after watching this documentary I know lots about the electric car!

My Camp Recount

My Camp Recount
By Krishna Narayanan
Camp was exciting! On Monday was sailing and rafting. In sailing, Sonna, Crystal and I shared a boat. We took turns on the main sheet, middle and tiller. JR said if we were confident, we could do sailing backwards. JR said to us "Do you want to learn to sail backwards or speed sailing?" Sonna, Crystal and I made an agreement that the person controlling the tiller was in charge of any decisions at the time. Crystal was at the tiller so she said "Speed sailing". We went so fast I got seasick. Then we capsized. Well, the boat tilted and Sonna Crystal fell into the water. I was still on the boat, at an angle so I hopped into the water. JR said we were the fastest boat! Next up was rafting. Team A (us) called our raft the Chinese Takeaway. We won because our raft fell apart after Team B's.
We were going to dinner. I love just about absolutely about every dessert. So at dinner when Siyi and Sonna hadn't even touched their dessert (chocolate pudding), I got to have three servings! Mmmm!
On Tuesday was rock wall, confidence course, kayaking and high ropes. Confidence course was fun as! But Team B won.
On Wednesday was gunwalk, archery, survivor and orienteering. On the gunwalk, we saw old war stuff.
The night activity for Monday was hall activites with Matt. We played "zim zam", length of the hall in people and Clothing.
On Tuesday the night activity was spotlight with Miss Mudford. Sonna, Crystal and I won three out of five games by hiding in a very good place. Parents come with torches to try find you. We can't have torches. But I had one. I never used it because I don't want ot cheat.
The night activity for Wednesday was Burma Trail with Mr Crowhurst. Parents come and scare you by wearing masks, whistling loud, jumping, flicking water/mustard and moaning. When we came back, I just found out we were walking the hill of the survivor course!!! Everything seems so scary in the dark.
This is what I have to say about camp: "camp was an amazing experience but last years (at Finlay Park) was better."

Cellphone Report

Cellphone Report

By Krishna Narayanan

In the olden days cell phones were a huge size and could only dial and text. But later on cellphones were improving to smaller size and better features. People can also buy cellphone covers in patterns to protect their cellphones.

Cellphones are quite good but there are some disadvantages.

  • It will get wet in the rain and won’t work (if you don’t buy a cellphone cover)
  • It might get lost.
  • It might get stolen.
  • It loses charge quickly.
